First, can you please state your name and role in Heroes And Underdogs?

My name is Kevin Hayden and I play the guitar for the band. My main role in the band is to order grilled cheeses from Kayla which never get made. :(

How did you come up with the band name?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

How did the band get started?

It all started a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away when Kayla wrote a whole mess of songs and decided to create a band. She called forth the super powers that be from all across the galaxy of Poughkeepsie, NY. Thus, Heroes & Underdogs was born.

How would you describe your sound?

Powerful vocals accompanied by some bright and poppy music!

What sets Heroes And Underdogs apart from other bands?

We're complete losers!

Can you tell us more about your EP, That's My Name, Don't Wear It Out?

Just a small mix of songs we currently have in our arsenal that have been recorded by our friend Max Wyre. (Drummer of That's Outrageous!) We thought these were pretty strong songs to walk onto the scene with.

What is your favorite song you have recorded so far? What is it about?

My favorite song we have recorded is actually being exclusively released on Purevolume.com on Monday, the 19th. It's called Electric and it was written by our friend Joshua Lawrence. I'm not usually one who likes to play music not written by the band, but Josh has been super busy with school and insisted that we take it. This song has been in so many different stages and a lot of our friends have had their hands in it. We will be releasing our rendition of Electric on Monday, guest vocals on the track from our pal Taylor Jardine from We Are The In Crowd. It is my understanding this song is very special to both Kayla and Taylor, so I am very excited to release this. This is gonna be a good one :)

Are you working on any new music?

Yes we currently have a BUNCH of new songs written and more in the process. Once we finish Joe's studio (http://www.joecostable.com/) in Milford, PA, we are going spend hours recording, mastering, and releasing our tracks without any time restraints.

What's the biggest struggle as an upcoming band? And what would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?

The biggest struggle, which every upcoming band can agree on, is separating yourself from the pack and creating the buzz you need to make it in today's music scene. I would consider our biggest accomplishment to be holding down the top spot on Purevolume.com for as long as we did and getting band/song of the week with our track "Dear Sarah, If There Was A Better Way To Say Sorry I'd Say It."

How would you describe your local music scene in NY? How has it helped you?

The music scene in Poughkeepsie is pretty huge I'd say, and that in itself presents a large opportunity to expand. We have friends in many different bands who we can play with at any given time. A lot of good music comes and plays in Poughkeepsie, NY; whether at the Chance, The Loft, or the Civic Center. It has helped us because of the networking and friendships it creates. Everyone in the band has met because we were in another band and played with each other. Without the music scene, I probably would never have met any of these guys :(

If you could tour with any band, past or present, who would it be?

I personally would want to tour John Mayer. That guy is my idol and I would love to just share a room with him and learn to play like him. I also don't understand people who don't like his music, it's TOO good.

Any crazy fan/tour stories?

Nothing really yet because we haven't toured yet, but soon... soon...

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for this year?

We will be periodically releasing new music throughout the year, so be ready for that. Also we have a show April 13th at the Loft in Poughkeepsie, NY for Jeff Menig's Birthday Bash. We'll be playing with Dino Club and Just Surrender!

In this interview, Seth and I talked about Attalus' new album, Post Tenebras Lux.

Can you please state your name and roll in Attalus?

My name is Seth and I write lyrics, sing, and play piano in the band.

Can you tell us more about your album, Post Tenebras Lux? What was the concept behind it? What was the writing process like for this album?

The concept, “After darkness, light,” specifically deals with the themes of doubt, discouragement and moments of prodigality that we all face in this lifetime (represented as darkness), as well as the themes of hope, grace and mercy that we are promised in the life to come (represented by light). The Apostle Paul once said that in this world we merely see God through a blurry glass, but one day we will see Him face to face. That’s the message of this CD. Life isn’t easy. Faith doesn’t answer all the important questions. God sometimes seems invisible and uncaring. But in the midst of our doubt, He continues to lead us into the greener pastures of faith and reminds us that in the end the struggle will all be worth it.

Many of these songs were written during times of my own personal doubt, and are testimonies of how God led me back to Him both intellectually and, more importantly, spiritually. So we wanted to let people hear these songs as well in order that they could be encouraged in their own journey of faith. As the ending of the song Post Tenebras Lux says, “The road of faith will lead to sight… after darkness comes the Light.” We believe that… and it has made all the difference both in our music and in our lives as a whole.

How has the overall reaction been to Post Tenebras Lux?

We received very high reviews on certain websites and have been greatly encouraged by the number of people who have written us to tell us how much the songs have meant to them! We didn’t put as much time into the making of this album as we needed to, but it was a learning process. So the response we received was exactly what we were hoping for. People loved the tunes and many were encouraged by the lyrics as well! We hope that more people are able to hear it over the next few months as we spend time writing our next album.

What song would you consider to be your most personal off of this album?

This is a tough question, because 3 or 4 were all written at what I would call “defining” moments in my life. But perhaps the most personal is “A Country Road in Two Seasons.” Its deeper meaning is something everyone can relate to, but its literal meaning is of an actual place where I once lived.

I spent 8 months in Wales studying for a Master’s Degree in Ancient History and Classics. I went to Wales because of the rolling hillsides, the castles, and the rich history, and it was a wonderful experience. In January of 2010, I sequestered myself away in a kind family’s home a mile up the road from the University, and there I spent a month writing my dissertation. The road from my host’s house and the University winded down through the town and into the valley, and it was surrounded on all sides by acres and acres of pasture land. It was a beautiful country road and I enjoyed the daily walks to and from the University.

But Winter in Wales is as torrid as Fall in Wales is beautiful. And one Winter day, as I left the University to make the mile-long uphill trip, a storm hit. I sprinted uphill in the freezing rain, nestling two laptop computers beneath my coat. That run would give me a severe cold and an ear-infection that persisted for the remaining weeks of my time there.

The following week the sky was black and the valley was flooded. There was no more pasture-land. Sheep were stranded on the tops of hillsides and a dense fog covered the town. The hills were dark and covered with what looked like smoke. For all you Lord of the Rings fans, it looked a bit like Mordor. I was sick. It was cold and dark, and I became depressed.

Then, one day, the fog cleared. The sun came back out and all the dew began to glisten on the hills. Wales was green again! The water evaporated and grass began to peak its way through the flooded valley. Everything was brighter… including my complexion!

That’s when the realization struck me that faith is a lot like that country road I had been walking for that entire month. Sometimes the environment changes; sometimes life is clear and nice and sometimes it’s dark and gloomy; sometimes you can see a mile ahead of you and sometimes you barely see the next step. But through it all the road is taking you home. No matter what the world looks like; no matter how dark and blurry life gets; God is still leading us. You can’t always see His hand; you can’t always see the effects of His providence and love, but it’s still there. The world changes with the seasons and so does our attitude toward it, but God doesn’t change. “The Winter and Fall; I’ve walked through them all; but this road keeps leading me to You.”

That’s what a country road in Wales taught me almost 2 years ago. And that’s what I hope to remember the rest of my way home.

How would you compare this material to your previous EP, The Greater Tide?

This material is more cohesive than The Greater Tide because the songs fit together thematically in a way that the songs on our previous album didn’t. Some people like our old EP better because they say it’s 5 really good songs that stand on their own, whereas PTL is 10 songs that, while working together very well, don’t necessarily stand on their own quite as well. Some of our “die-hard” fans who loved The Greater Tide haven’t been as pleased with this project, whereas others have considered it a noticeable improvement both musically and thematically. Opinions will always vary. Ultimately we are happy with this album and consider it a logical progression from our previous EP.

Can fans expect a new single soon?

We aren’t very fond of making “singles” but we are going into the studio next month to record a few acoustic songs. We’re very excited to give our fans a different taste of Attalus than they have had before.

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for within the next year?

Besides the acoustic songs, we’re also making lyric videos for some of Post Tenebras Lux and potentially a music video. Having signed with a new manager in February we are excited to see what doors will open for us this year, so my advice to you and all our fans is to keep checking our facebook page for updates! You never know what might show up.

In this interview, Josh answered the questions.

Can you please state your name and role in In Motion?

Josh (Vocals, Guitar)

How did you come up with the band name?

We were playing around with a few names that we really liked and honestly the name just came up. Before we decided to go with the band In Motion we were about to name our band “The Morning After” but we decided not to seeing how it would constantly get tied in with the day after pill haha.

How did the band get started?

Taylor, Johnny, and I have always been apart of bands and music. I was in a band previously and had a lot of fun but truly missed being able to write what makes me happiest. I started demoing ideas and before I knew it I had a bunch of new material that I was in love with. I started this band with Johnny eventually recruited Taylor to form In Motion.

How would you describe your sound?

We are all heavily influenced by pop punk music and have been throughout our lives. I would describe us as Boys like girls meets yellowcard meets blink 182. We have some very happy pop punk songs but we also have a serious side.

What sets In Motion apart from other bands?

Drive. Obviously all bands want the same thing and thats to play to millions or play on awesome festivals such as warped tour. Everyday is another day to progress, grow, and move forward as a band and artist. We don’t let what people think or say bring us down due to the fact that we are incredibly happy doing what we do. Its our form of expression. We will push limits to get to where we want.

Can you tell us more about your single, December Nights? Are you working on any new music?

December Nights was a song that I wrote obviously during the holiday season. Those who know me understand that I am obsessed with Christmas. I love the spirit, lights, and joy it brings to everyone. I always wanted to write a song about the holiday and have always tried and failed. This song however was so natural, it just happened and when I finished writing it I was so excited. Yes we have new music already released. We have two songs which are I'ts Not Me, It's You (Available on itunes) and For All Eternity. Much more music is on the way!

What's the biggest struggle as an upcoming band? What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?

The biggest struggle as an upcoming band would have to be getting people to believe in you. Not everyone in the world is going to love your music and that is something that we have accepted. Getting people to see the vision you have created as clearly as you do is a struggle in it self.

The biggest accomplishment would have to be that fact that we got to record at Conway Recording Studio down in Hollywood. The history of this studio is amazing. Some of the biggest names record there right now and some of the artist we idolize have made records at this studio. The fact that we get to continue to record again soon is just amazing.

What made you want to get into music?

So many different things made us get into music. I (Josh) remember growing up and my dad always listening to bands like nirvana, pearl jam, and U2. Those albums have stuck with me till this day and My dad would tell me how I would reenact Slash playing the guitar outside of the church on the music video for November Rain. I guess you can say I was meant to be a guitar player….but im still no slash haha.

If you could tour with any band, past or present, who would it be?

We all have different answers for this! Johnny would tour with Blink-182, Taylor would love to tour with Foo Fighters, and Josh would love to tour with Tonight Alive, Yellowcard and also Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl for president.

How would you describe the local music scene in Los Angeles? How has it helped you?

Honestly the local scene in Los Angeles/Orange County seems to be a lot of hardcore music. In terms of helping a pop punk I guess the only thing we can add and bring is something new to listen to.

What are some bands that people should be on the lookout for?

We have tons of friends who are in awesome bands that everyone should look out for! To name a few The Ready Aim Fire, Setting Sunrise, Eighth City Takeover, and Tonight Alive.

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for within the year?

Yes! Our very first album will be out sometime this year so that is definitely something to look out for and shows! This is going to be a fun year but we are going to take it day by day.

Interview with Artist of the Week: The Only Ocean

In this interview, Dustin answered the questions.

What does your music sound like?

I honestly do not how to classify our music except by just saying that we are a rock band. We have been compared to certain bands before but I think we have done a pretty good job so far of keeping our sound original. Our music is constantly changing, with more effects being thrown into the mix to challenge ourselves both on the cd, as well as at our live shows. Listen to the songs for yourselves and you be the judge.

What songs of yours do you think captures your sound the best?

Out of the four songs we just released, I think the song that best captures our sound is Dissolve. Probably my favorite out of the sampler. Its got a strong intro/verse riff as well as a catchy chorus, but the bridge is what sets this song apart from the others, in my opinion. It definately shows the "trippy" side of our music.

How did the band start?

We all have known of each other since middle school but I hung out with a different group of people. In our senior year of high school, Wesley asked me if I wanted to play guitar in a band that him and our bass player, Alex, had started. After about 6 months or so of jamming and getting our songs down, we asked Shae, who had been in a band with Wesley freshman year, if he would be our drummer. Ever since then, things have just clicked and our songs are getting better and better, at least in my opinion. Just four buddies playing music we love to play.

If you don't mind me asking, how old is everyone?

We are all 19 years old, but Wesley is about to turn 20 in a week or so.

How long has the band been around for?

We have been a complete band, with all our current members, for about 10-11 months now, I believe. Wesley and Alex have been playing and writing our early material since the beginning of our senior year though, I think, and I came into it towards the end of high school. I don't really consider us being a legitimate band though until we got Shae. That is when all the pieces started falling together.

How did you come up with the name The Only Ocean?

It is a lyric from a song of one of our favorite bands, The Arctic Monkeys. The song is called Potion Approaching.

What’s something interesting and funny that fans may not know about everyone in the band?

Oh man. Haha. Thats a hard question. Me and Wesley plan on making our own comedy skit show one day, Alex can finish jigsaw puzzles like a mad man, and Shae...you just need to meet him. He is probably the funniest, most interesting, tannest person I have ever met.

Any crazy fan stories?

The only one that really comes to mind is our show at the SLO Downtown Brew. We opened up for The Cab one night and played an awesome set. When we were down playing, we basically got rushed by all The Cab fans for autographs, pictures, etc. It was weird because we are not really used to that. We are a band that is basically just starting out and people wanted us to sign our cds and take pictures with them? It was an amazing feeling, just caught us off guard.

Any crazy tour stories?

Unfortunately not yet. We have kind of been financially burdened lately and the only traveling we have really been able to do is when we went up to Fresno, CA for four days to record our sampler.

So you haven't actually toured before?

We have played quite a few shows around Hollywood and up north but working around four people's full-time work schedules, it is rather difficult. We are saving up for a spring break tour right now, so hopefully that will work out.

What are some bands that some people should be on the look for?

Two bands from our hometown that everyone should listen to are Saint Anne's Place and Millions. They are both amazing bands with incredible talent. I hope to be that good one day.

Who are your musical influences?

Our number one influence, by far, would be The Arctic Monkeys. Some other ones would be Manchester Orchestra, Brand New, Incubus, and Portugal The Man. I'm sure there are plenty of other ones that I am forgetting, but that is all i can think of off the top of my head.

What is your writing process and recording process like?

A lot of the credit for the song writing would definitely go to Wesley. Most of the time, he will show us an idea he has for a song, and then we will each write our own part to it to compliment what he has already written. Sometimes, me or Alex will show up with a riff or lead that we think is cool and then we will write parts to go along with it. We practice about four times a week now and have about 4 new songs (not including the ones on our 2011 Sampler). Our writing process, especially now, is going rather quickly. Our recording process has been very interesting. I have my own, budget, recording equipment that we recorded our first EP with in Wesley's garage and at our friend's music store. It took us about a year to record that CD, and we don't even like those songs anymore. The songs from our Sampler, we recorded in 4 days with our friend, Justin Rosander at his studio on Fresno, California and they came out amazing, in our opinion. So much less time was put into these new songs yet they came out way better than our old ones. You can tell that a lot more time was put into working on each of our individual instruments in this CD as compared to the old one. Anyone who was a fan of the first CD, was hopefully pleasantly surprised when we released this one.

What CD kind of impacted you when you were a teenager?

I was sort of a metal head when I was younger so I listened to a lot of hardcore albums. Haha. But Sum 41's Chuck and Green Day's Dookie were probably the two albums that made me most excited for playing this style.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I pull my inspiration from the desire for success for this band. I don't want to spend my life doing a job that I dread for the rest of my life. What would be better than playing to a crowd of people that paid their hard earned money just to see you? Just to hear the songs that you and your best friends spend all their free time writing? I may be aiming a little high, but that sounds like a perfect lifestyle to me.

Are you writing any new music? And if you are, could you give any sneak peaks on the new songs?

We are writing new music. We have about 4 new finished songs (other than the four we just released) that we have never played live and a few other potential songs that still need some work. All I can say is that the songs are getting a lot more intricate and that if you liked our sampler, you will be in for a treat with these new ones. Haha. If time allows us, we will be releasing demos of the new ones within the next few weeks.

Do you do any rituals backstage before you go onstage?

If we are nervous, a lot of bathroom breaks. Haha. Otherwise, we just go for hugs with exactly two pats on the back each.

What would you like fans to bring you for presents/gifts?

If they show up to our concerts to see us, that is better than any gift. We love taking pictures with people, talking with them, anything really. Haha. We just like knowing that our songs are appreciated by someone. So for anyone reading this who likes our music and plans on seeing us in concert when we are in your area, don't be afraid to confront us!

How would you describe your live shows?

I would hope fun to watch. Haha. I sort of zone out when we play and lose sight of what is going on around me, not to sound corny. When I ask people in the crowd for feedback, we always get really good responses and asked about cd's, which we almost always give away for free. People definitely seem to like that. Haha.

What would you like to tell your fans?

How did the band start?
Late Summer of 2009. Dugan and I were both dying to start bands and weren't having much luck so we signed up for an internet site called BandMix. Just imagine eHarmony for musicians haha. After not using the site for months, I got a message from Dugan asking if I wanted to meet up and Jam, so we did. He somehow lured me into playing as a two piece band because we couldn’t find any other members. We played as a two piece for about 8 months until Dugan’s brother, Conor, was seduced into playing bass for us.
After playing as a three piece for a couple months, we were asked to play as a backing band for up and coming singer/songwriter Justin Chase. While setting up for a sound check we met Kirby, who was asked to play lead guitar for Justin. We all clicked right away, and during sound checks the the four of us had an amazing jam and knew there was some chemistry.

How old is everyone in the band?
Dugan - 22, Sam - 21, Kirby - 20, Conor - 19

How long has the band been around for?
2 years since the band formed but only a little over a year since we've had the full band

How did you come up with your name?
Originally our band was called Pull. Our manager at the time strongly insisted we change the name to something a little more unique. Tangent Transmission was the name of one of our songs, which is now called Self Acquisition. After a couple days of brainstorming new names I (Sam) had the idea of using Tangent Transmission as our band name and Dugan loved it.

Something funny and/or interesting about each band member.
Sam is an avid Tennis player, Dugan is a certified mixologist, Kirby is a huge Lord of the Rings Fan, and Conor is super into Gucci Mane.

Any crazy tour stories?
None yet, knock on wood.

Who are your musical influences?
Music is endless and it changes from time to time, but as of right now... Muse, Radiohead, Tool, RX Bandits, Incubus, Joe Satriani, Greg Howe, Queen, Children of Bodom, Foxy Shazam, Jeff Buckley, and Stevie Wonder sound about right.

What is your writing and recording process like?
Let's start with writing - Usually what'll happen is Dugan will come in with some ideas he has for new songs. Sometimes the ideas are completed songs and sometimes its just a single part. We all take his ideas and help arrange the songs and create new parts for everyone in the band. Recording - On our last EP Pull we had the privilege of working with the Grammy Award winning producer, Matt Hyde (Jonny Lang, No doubt, Children of Bodom). When we go in we do our best to have everything down to the best of our ability so we don't have to waste time in the studio nailing our parts. Although there is a bit of creative magic that can happen in the studio, it’s mostly us practicing, and practicing, and practicing before we go in so that the recording process can be as easy, painless, and fun as possible.

What CD impacted you when you were a teenager?
Sam - Depends how old you're talking haha. I can only speak for myself obviously but when I was 14 a big one was Dookie by Green Day. When I was 19 RX Bandits released Mandala and to this day is one of my favorite albums of all time. It really pushed me to be creative with whatever music I make.

Dugan- The first really big one was ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magic’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I had never heard something so funky, mean, and soulful all at the same time. I was about sixteen when I heard that. The next really big one was ‘Absolution’ by Muse, after hearing that, I understood there was such a larger soundscape to rock than anything I had heard. And finally the last really big one was ‘Grace’ by Jeff Buckley. Don’t think there’s explaining I have to do on that one.

Where does our inspiration come from?
We are inspired by other artists and musicians, our friends and family, important world issues, and just about anything that draws emotion or provokes thought for us.

Are you writing any new music?
Yes ma’am! Firstly, we just released a new Holiday Video featuring our brand new song 10,000 Years.You can find the video on our YouTube channel, which is youtube.com/tangenttransmission. For those looking for our heavier music, we have a bunch of new material that we’re planning to record this winter and hopefully release by Spring. We'll probably be posting some live videos or bits and pieces of individual parts so you can all hear the songs before they’re released. Ooooor you can come to one of our shows and here it live!

What would you like fans to bring you for presents/gifts?
We appreciate the gift of fans’ attention above any material item. Thank you thus far, and thank you in advanced.

How would you describe your live shows?
We do our best to make the audience feel like they're being told a story through the music and feel some kind of connection to the music in their own way. Besides that, expect high energy, laughter, and as much soul as you can take.

What would you like to tell your fans?
We love every single one of you and can't thank you enough for your support. We wouldn't be able to do any of this without you.

What's up with the Monkey?
First of all its not a monkey! It's a Gorilla haha. It's a marketing concept we came up with called "Gorilla Marketing." We go around to random places with a gorilla suit to hand out flyers and stickers. We also have extra masks so we always invite tribe members to come with us and help promote. In time we kind of just made the Gorilla a part of the band and we have him make guest appearances at shows and doing other random things such as Grocery shopping and playing laser tag. In case it sounded weird, our street team has been dubbed the ‘Tangent Tribe’, so when I say Tribe members, its referring to them.

Do you have any rituals before your shows?
Not really. We're usually all too busy warming up, and making sure everything is getting done in order have a successful show.

Whats the latest EP you put out?
Our latest EP is titled Pull and was made available for download March of 2011. We know its super late but we will have physical copies ready in the next couple weeks. They will be available on our website, www.tangenttransmission.com or for download on iTunes. We had two songs of "Pull" that got really cool media placements. The first track, Empty Bottles, was featured in CBS's NCIS: Los Angeles last January. It was in the opening scene of the episode, Archangel. Also, our song call was placed in the trailer for a new stand up paddle surfing documentary called H2Indo. You can find the trailer on the video tab of our website.

Who in the band does the most driving?
Since we don't have a van we usually have to take at least two cars for every show we play. The next best thing we have is my truck so I almost always get stuck driving.

How would you describe your sound?
Dark, fun, and funky fresh!

Can you please state your name(s) and role(s) in The Ocean's Eyes?

How did you come up with the band name?

Mitch: It was just an idea that I’d scribbled down with loads of other name ideas. It was the one that Luke and I settled on when we started the band.

How did the band get started?

Luke: In January 2010, Mitch and I started putting a few of our own ideas together, and as it was going well, we decided to get a whole band together, and we completed the line up by the summer.

How would you describe your sound?

Luke: Somebody once said we’re “pop with a raw punk edge” and I think I can agree with that, so we’ll maintain that for sure.

What sets The Ocean's Eyes apart from other bands?

Luke: The energy of our live show, we’re not afraid to go that extra mile so people remember us for that, as well as our music.

Can you tell us more about your EP, Lost Along The Way?

Mitch: Each song basically relates to either losing yourself or finding yourself and realizing what you have or what you've done. Sometimes you have to lose yourself to find yourself again.

How has the overall reaction been to your new EP?

Luke: Really good! So many people have taken the time to listen to it or buy it, which we’re really happy about, and people seem to like it a lot more than our first EP, which is an obvious step forward.

As a band, what's your biggest accomplishment so far?

Mitch: Releasing two EPs in one year (2011) and embarking on our first two UK tours during this Autumn/Winter.

If you could tour with any band, past or present, who would it be?

Luke: Blink-182, they’ve been my favourite band for as long as I can remember, they created a massive pop-punk empire and paved the way for so many bands in this genre, and we’d also be able to reach out to so many people.

How would you describe your local music scene in England? How has it helped you?

Mitch: Our local music scene is very crowded. In London there are so many bands and it's such a busy city that it’s harder to reach out to people. There have been a lot of London based people that have helped us out in big ways. Going out of London and branching out to the rest of the country has really helped us to reach out to new people and get new people into our music. Which also helps us spread the word about T.O.E!

Who are some of your musical influences?

Luke: blink-182, Brand New, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Hidden In Plain View.

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for in the upcoming year?

Luke: We’re touring in March with Room 94 which we’re extremely excited about!

Can you please state your name and role in Humana?

Chris: guitar

How did you come up with the band name?

I recall it came up after going through a bunch of names. We were looking for an one-word name like the big bands. It also had to be a word that either meant many things or just nothing, so that way we could spark off curiosity within the listener. We liked the idea of someone reading the name of our band and wondering: what are they about? Humana in Spanish means many things but can be more or less translated as "belonging to humans."

How did the band get started?

Matias (vocals & guitar) and Miguel (bass) were classmates in college in 2003, and a year after Pablo(drums) and I (Christian, guitar) joined the same jazz school. Miguel, Pablo and I had already been very close friends for a long time. When Matias showed the music he was writing at the time to Miguel, they decided to play together, and soon after Pablo and I joined.

How would you describe your sound?

Our sound is a mix of many things due to a large variety of music styles each of us likes. However it never goes out of the rock borders. I also get to hear our Latin American roots within the groove which is something that I particulary like.

Can you tell us more about your album, In Case of Ear Discomfort?

"ICOED" was produced and recorded in Chile by Pepe Lastarria and Matias Figueroa (vocals & guitar). We think it's a humble and honest album as it was completely written in our rehersal room. Every riff and chord came up while jamming. That makes this album very special for us.

How has the overall reaction been to your album?

It has been pretty good. Fans and media seem to dig this looking-for-new-sounds last album we released. We wanted to explore darker tunnings and rhythms. Fortunately, that has been appreciated by the public resulting in great reviews and new fans.

What sets Humana apart from other bands?

What sets us apart from other bands in Chile is the way we work on our music and our band as a concept. We always try to do the best we can in terms of writing music, sound, image and live performances. For us Humana is a 24/7 job. What also makes the difference is that we are a group of people working hard to take music to another level; we're not out there to be idols.

How would you describe the local music scene in Chile? How has it helped you?

I'd describe it as a growing scene. Even though we have many good bands within the rock scene in Chile, it's a tough task to spread the music country-wide since our country lacks big labels or media willing to support the cause. Therefore Independent record labels such as "La Somba Records (www.lasombarecords.com)" are trying to create new and bigger opportunities for bands to get their work exposed in local media. Luckily, media, as in radio stations and magazines, have been really supportive to Humana music since we get started. We are grateful to them.

If you could tour with any band, past or present, who would it be?

I might picture us touring with bands like Deftones, Thrice, Foo Fighters just to name a few.

Who are some of your musical influences?

I guess we were strongly influenced by bands like Refused, Glassjaw, Deftones and Thrice. We also like metal so Pantera and Meshuggah can't be left out. On the other hand, the jazz education we got in college has also found its way into our sound, making Humana what it is.

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for within the next year?

For now we're focused on spreading this new album to as many places as we can. We'd love to have our hard work get us to the U.S. music scene, and of course writing new music will overlap anything we decide to do.

In this interview, Michael Berean answered the questions.

Can you please state your name(s) and role(s) in Verse The End?

This is Michael, I sing and play guitar for Verse The End.

How did you come up with the band name?

The name Verse The End means to speak poetically, or write about the end of something. It makes verse an action. To verse the end.

How did the band get started?

The band formed from two other bands coming to an end. I was working with Jared, our keyboard player, on a side project. Myself, Bryan our drummer, and CJ our guitarist all had been playing together for years. We decided let's just put all of this together and form a new band. We met Jon a couple months later, and knew he was the final piece to the puzzle. He's a great bassist.

How would you describe your sound?

We have the ability to weave through different genres without coming off as too experimental. Pop, rock and metal blended together to form a sound we like to consider all our own. Our lyrics and vocals are thought out and developed, as is our music.

What sets Verse The End apart from other bands?

First off we are extemely hard working. We have been playing, writing, promoting, booking and marketing ourselves for years now. We are constantly changing and adapting to the progression of the internet and market as well. We're no amateurs when it comes to this, I really think that gives us an edge. Music wise we have a sound and set that is completely all our own. Our band is able to play pop, rock, metal songs while infusing this sound with piano and synth sounds. Right now I don't think a lot of bands can say they do that. We also play acoustically, which gives our songs a totally different light. We make music, we're not trying to join any scenes. We want to be ourselves.

Can you tell us more about your EP, Heavy Hearts & Counterparts?

"Heavy Hearts" was our debut EP. We have a brand new EP coming out very soon, but this was our first effort. It was our first experience working with a producer, who really helped mold the songs, and added some great additions to the music. We worked with John Naclerio (Senses Fail, My Chemical Romance, Brand New) on this EP, who has a great ear, and has worked with so many bands we grew up listening to. The EP got some great reviews and the response it had gave us some real confidence to take this band to the next level.

How has the overall reaction been to your new EP?

So far we have offically released the song "Golden Age" from the new EP. It's officially recorded, we are just working on all the details for the release of it digitally, and physically. The response to "Golden Age" has been great. I think people are going to see that on this EP we really stepped up our game on every aspect. We can't wait to have everyone hear it.

What's the biggest struggle as an upcoming band? What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?

The biggest struggle is getting recognition. With so many bands out there you have to find a way to set yourself apart from them, and you have to put in the work. No one is going to give you this, you have to make it happen. Our biggest accomplishment is that we're out here doing this. Giving it a shot. Whatever happens in the end, we chased our dreams and we didn't fold our cards. That's an accomplishment in it self.

If you could tour with any band, past or present, who would it be?

Thrice would by my dream band to tour with. As far as the other guys, Jimmy Eat World, Muse, & Pantera.

How would you describe the local music scene in NY? How has it helped you?

The music scene on our town is pretty weak. Everyone is in a band, so it's hard to impress people. It's forced us to develop a core fanbase though, and utilize the internet, and travel for shows, which I think is a good thing.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Bowie, At The Drive In, Thrice, Pantera, Muse, John Mayer, August Burns Red, Jimmy Eat World & Alkaline Trio. Just to name a few. Collectively we listen to a lot of music.

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for in the upcoming year?

2012 is the release of our brand new EP! So be on the lookout for that, because it's really going to set us apart from a lot of bands out there, and we are really excited to share it with everyone.

In this interview, Ian Kenny answered the questions.

How would you describe your sound?

Like raw energetic rock band… We play rock and roll, but we like to, ya know we keep things fresh, ya know, we all listen to different types of music we like to incorporate like jazz, we like to add like different colors to ya know, just the basic rock and roll and sounds.

Yeah, because one of the members plays cello?

Yeah, Eric, he plays a bunch of instruments, he went to college for bass, he plays double bass, so he can play any heavy stringed instruments, it’s pretty cool.

How did the band get started?

My old band broke up around the same time that Jordan our drummer, and Tommy our guitarist, their band broke up, they were in a different band called Destiny or Design, and they broke up around the same time my other band broke up, so we started jamming and hanging out, I always knew Eric, our bass player, because his little brother was in my old band.. Then Eric told me he would play bass on any new project I would start up or whatever… Me, Tommy, and Jordan jammed out a little bit, and as a band we invited Eric down, and we started NGHBRS.

How long have you been together for?

2 years.

How did you come up with the name NGHBRS?

When we first started writing songs together, we wrote one song called NGHBRS, and it was like NGHBRS, but spelt out, with the vowels and everything… What had happened, we had recorded 4 songs, for maybe like an EP, but we were kinda just feeling each other out, so ended up scraping the songs, and NGHBRS was the title of the first song we wrote, so we just decided to take out the vowels, and make it our own thing.

What’s something interesting and funny that fans may not know about everyone in the band?

Our guitarist, actually knows pretty much nothing about guitar, he’s a self taught musician, he honestly, we teach him new things every day, but it’s kinda cool, because his style is really like no other, to be honest, because he doesn’t really play acoustic guitar… He never learned the basic chords, that’s why it’s kinda cool, he kinda doesn’t know what he’s doing, but does, at the same time.

Any crazy fan stories?

We haven’t really had any crazy fans, we like to do ya know, nice things for our fans… We played in North Carolina this summer, and fans of ours, had driven from another part of North Carolina to see us, like they drove 2 hours, and their car got towed, so we like took them in our van, and drove them down to the place to get their car back… Just cool stuff, if we get to a show early, and see people there, just hanging out, that are there to see us play, we invite them out to dinner with us, and we just hang out… We don’t really have crazy crazy… That’s pretty much it… We did have some kid, follow us to 3 shows in a row, and he stood in the same spot every show, and he was like banging his head right in front, it was really cool, but he wound up getting like head issues, he might have a concussion or something…

Any crazy tour stories?

It was our first tour this summer… Back in June, it was like our 5^th date on the tour, and we were in Michigan, and we just had got a new van, and were driving, and we were like new to the road, so we didn't know what to expect, and were driving at 70, I was actually driving, and our back tire, completely exploded… And we swerved off the road, and were right in the middle of Michigan, and we had to get towed, the guy who was driving was drunk… It was crazy, but we wound up getting up a new tire, and we made it to the show on time…. It was okay, but we wound up met some interesting people in the process.

What’s the worst part about living and sleeping in a van?

Probably not having a bathroom… Ya know, it’s kinda like, I mean, it’s easier because we’re guys… But it’s a little annoying when you wake up in the morning, and just want to wash your face, but all you have is a bottle of water…

Is there any good things about living and sleeping in a van?

It’s fun every once in a while, as long as the weather is nice. When it’s really cold, it sucks. I mean, as long you have enough room. It’s a good thing that there are only four people in the band. We don’t have a trailer, so we have our equipment in our van as well. So sleeping in our van is pretty cramped. So we try to stay with friends as much as possible.

Out of the whole band, who does the most driving?

It’s honestly pretty equal, but I have to say, that Tommy probably does the worst drives. He’s stuck with the shitty ass drives. Like two in the morning, through mountains… He’s a tough one.

How old are you guys?

We’re all low 20s, I’m 21, Jordan is 22, Tommy is 21, Eric is 23.

Did you start the band after you got out of high school?

We started about a year after high school. So, I was in college for one year, and in the summer of my first year of college.

You were touring with Anarbor a little while ago, how was that?

That was awesome, there such cool guys, and we all like bonded. We became like bros, we really broed out on that tour. It was just really cool. There was a lot of kids that came out to that tour. So that was really nice.

Was that your first tour?

That was our second tour. Our first tour was in June of that summer, with a band that is from Long Island as well, called Gabriel The Marine. And we did kind of a co-headliner with that band. We did like North-East, down south, east coast. It was kind of our first getting our feet wet kinda thing.

Out of the venues that you played, which is your favorite?

Not on the tour, we played Irving Plaza, we opened for Envy For The Coast’s farewell show. That venue in New York City, Irving Plaza, is amazing. It’s a classic venue, it’s like beautiful, it’s awesome. As for on the tour, a pretty cool venue, we played in Pittsburgh, we played in an old church. I think it was called The Church. It had cathedrals ceilings, and shit. It had really cool stained windows, and there was a huge balcony.

I mean, I’m from Philadelphia, do you like our venues?

We did play The Trocadero, and we played the upstairs, and it had a really cool vibe. It was a really old fashioned bar. It was pretty sweet.

It’s very cramped up there, though, so.

Yeah, it is really cramped. We almost got our car stole there. The car told us where to park, and we like eyeballing our van the whole night. I appreciate that.

What are some bands that people should be on the lookout for?

A band called Your Sister’s Canary, they’re from Brooklyn, New York. They’re like amazingly talented. Those dudes are like really cool. They’re like an indie, pop, jazz band. It’s really cool. You know, our buddies in Gabriel The Marine. Those guys are awesome. They have an album coming out.

Who are your musicals influences?

Personally, I listen to a lot of singer/song writers. I grew up on the likes of Johnny Cash, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, stuff like that. As far as the band, we all collectively listen to our favorite bands together. Like SeaBass, Our As Bandits, Manchester Orchestra, Circa Survive. Growing up, like the first dudes, honestly, it doesn’t really sound like anything NGHBRS does, but Andrew McMahon from Something Corporate, and Jack Mannequin. He was like my first that I kind of analyzed as a song writer. So he defiantly, kind of how I write songs. But me, that’s me personally.

What is your writing process and recording process like?

Our writing process is kinda funny, we write as a group. There’s rarely times, I mean occasionally someone will come in with an idea, and kind of dictate everything. But, normally we write everything cohesively and make sure the vibe is right. And as for recording, we record in a home studio at our buddy Dan’s house, we record with him and another producer called Brian Russell. He’s recorded the likes of Envy Of The Coast. We recorded with sort a homey vibe, it was really relaxing, the point of recording is to capture everything, we like to keep everything raw. We like to get the emotion out.

What CD kind of impacted you?

Third Eye Blind’s self titled CD. It was very influence to me. That was one of my first bands as well. I just freaking love that album. It kind of changed you, it just made me wanna write lyrics, ya know, I thought it was really cool that they could have such good songs, and make you feel good, but have the lyrics so dark.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Just basically my everyday life. When I put pen to paper, I don’t really go into it. We’ll play and jam with it, and I’ll just let my mouth go, and I’ll just freestyle, and see what comes out. So a lot of lyrics that are on the EP and stuff like that, or songs we are writing now, are kinda just based on life experiences, and things I’ve gone through, that I think generally relate to other people.

What’s the newest EP you put out?

It’s called HelloMind

Are you writing any new music?

We just did a live studio session at the Converse Studio in Brooklyn. They opened up a new studio there. So, we just did a period of 4 videos. And those are older songs off our old EP. We’re writing right now. We’re going to record an EP and have it out by like Spring. We’ll probably release a song or two in the new few months, kinda like leading up to the EP. So yes, we are currently writing.

Do you do any rituals backstage before you go onstage?

Nothing crazy. Me personally, I get everyone a bottle of water, and just give everyone a handshake. We kind of get into our zone. We don’t really talk a whole lot before we go on stage. It’s kind of funny.

Do you have any upcoming shows?

In January, we are going to be on again, doing a regional thing, for like a week, hitting places like CT, probably Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, places like that. That’s to be announced, we can’t really announce who that’s with yet.

What would you like fans to bring you for presents/gifts?

We like Planter’s Trial Mix, we like our nuts. Maybe some berries, some chocolate, nuts.

Thank you for supporting us, and stick with us, because ya know, we’re trucking, we’re trying to get out there as much as possible, and it sucks that we can’t get to you. A lot of the cities fans want us to play at, very frequently. I would just to say, stick with us, we’ll do our best to get to you, and get to your city as much as possible. We’ll keep recording, and release music. Stick with us on our social networks, we’ll be putting out a shit ton of videos, soon. We don’t want to call our fans, our fans, we want to make them our friends. We want to create a NGHBRS family.

Interview with Artist of the Week: A Road To Damascus

In this interview, bassist Jakob answered the questions

First, can you please state your name(s) and role(s) in A Road To Damascus?

Mikkel: Lead vocals

How did you come up with the band name?

The name is an idiom for a sudden turning point in a person's life. We liked the sound of the name, and the meaning behind it, so that's basically why we chose it!

How did the band get started?

Our guitarists Mads and Jakob go way back. They've playing together for over 7 years in various bands, and have stuck to it through thick and thin. When their former band dissolved back in 2008 they had no intention of quitting and began to look for new people to start up a new project They found their singer in Mads' kid brother Mathias, and a few months later Anders and Jakob were recruitted. The band was complete by August 2009, and we immediately recorded our first EP afterwards. A year later Mathias decided to fleave the band to focus on other things, and in February 2011 we got a new leadsinger in Mikkel, who we recorded our debut album with during summer 2011, and now we're here!

How would you describe your sound?

We all have quite different musical backgrounds, but of course there are common denominators. We try to bring together the best of several worlds, and are really focus on having effective songwriting - no corners cut and I would describe our music as being catchy, dynamic and confident because of this.

What sets A Road To Damascus apart from other bands?

Always a difficult question to answer, but maybe the good looks!? haha. Well I think that we've managed to make music that appeal to a lot of different kind of people, and compared to our local scene we don't have much competitino. There's not really anyone I know of who sound quite like us, and are inspired by the same kind of bands.

Can you tell us more about your self titled album?

The oldest song of the album is 2½ years old and the newest was written a couple of weeks prior to the recording. So this album is pretty much a best of, of what we had written so far. We recorded it during summer 2011, and paid for everything ourselves, which gave us control of pretty much every aspect of it. Our producer, Kristian Thomsen, had some great ideas and was great at pointing out stuff which could be improved upon. He also mixed and mastered the whole thing. We really trusted him, and are glad we did because we're really proud and happy about the result.

How has the overall reaction been to your self titled album?

It's been overwhelmingly positive! When you're in the middle of recording you have no idea how it's going to turn out, and how the reactions are going to be, but we've been dumbfounded by the great response we've got - from all over the world! It makes us really proud and gives us confidence that we're doing works, and that it might be possible for us to take this band far.

What's the biggest struggle as an upcoming band? And what's your biggest accomplishment so far?

The biggest struggle is definitely getting your name known. Promotion is so important. Yet the internet has made it possible for bands like us who are completely independent to reach places far away with few ressources. But it still is hard not to drown in the sea of bands that already exist and are craving the same attention as you. Our biggest accomplishment I would say is this album. We've taken matters in our own hands, and have recorded and released an album by ourselves. We've spent so many hours, energy, money and resources on it, and we're really proud of the result.

If you could tour with any band, past or present, who would it be?

We'd definitely like to tour with A Day To Remember, Living With Lions, We Came As Romans, Underoath, Blessthefall, Circa Survive, Emery, Silverstein.. allright, this list could just go on and on. Pretty much every band that we're inspired by and look up to we'd like to tour with. Basically, we'd just like to tour!!

How would you describe your local music scene in Denmark? How has it helped you?

Small. Denmark is not a big country at all, and that reflects on the amount of bands, and genres represented. The cool thing about it is that the bands that are the slightest similar to each other all know each other, and helps each other out by booking shows together. But you can only go so far by staying in Denmark, and for our specific kind of music I wouldn't really say that any real local scene exist. Denmark is just to small.

Who are some of your musical influences?

This is also a hard question because like I said before, we all have quite different musical backgrounds, yet there are common denominators like the bands mentioned before under the tour question, and bands like Broadway, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Sleeping With Sirens, Death Cab For Cutie, Taking Back Sunday.. and whole bunch more.

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for within the next year?

First, can you please state your name and role in The Getaways?

Mike Altner and I play the vocal chords.

How did you come up with the band name?

It was a name that I and our old drummer came up with. We thought it sounded cool and sounded different than a lot of the bands today.

How did the band get started?
The Getaways, as the band today, came together and began writing our first EP in the summer of 2008. We all know each other from school, or from previous bands and have played together.

How would you describe your sound?

At its’ core, it’s pop rock. But it definitely has an indie vibe to it (especially the material we are writing now). Our sound has changed a little between both EPs but we’ve always been a pretty synth-y band. A lot of emphasis on guitars and drums as well.

Can you tell us more about your new EP, The Boldest Thought?

The Boldest Thought is actually our most recent EP. We recorded it with Kory Gable (Senses Fail, The Dangerous Summer, I Call Fives). Our goal for that record was really just to write a upbeat, catchy, summer record. I think we accomplished just that. It is also where we began to experiment with synth drums, as our first EP used a lot of synths, but never synth drums.

Are you working on any music?

Yes actually! We are writing for a new EP and are getting ready to release a new song in a few weeks. Just working on finishing up mixes for that and mastering and then putting it out hot off the press! The song will be released for free download just as a way of saying thanks to all our fans who’ve supported us so far. We are extremely grateful for all the support and love we’ve gotten from our fans so this song is for them to let them know how much they mean to us!

What sets The Getaways apart from other bands?

I think our sound is something not as many bands are doing today. It really draws a lot of influence from the 80’s which is something not many bands harken back to today. As you’ll hear from the new song, we use sounds that not many other bands use and we put a big emphasis on the band-fan relationship. We try to make ourselves as accessible as possible both in-real-life and musically.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Well we all come from pretty different musical backgrounds so we all have different influences. Local music is something that influences us which I think is another thing that sets us apart. We’re all huge fans of a lot of fellow MD bands that we play/have played with: The Dangerous Summer, Storm The Beaches, Dropout Year, Hotspur, The Hint, Oh, The Story, American Diary, Clear For Takeoff, Me and This Army, The Aviator Set etc.

What’s your biggest accomplishment so far as a band?

We’ve had sooo many amazing opportunities. We’ve opened for We The Kings, Hawthorne Heights, Mayday Parade, Jeffree Star, Dev and many others as well as sharing tours with Just Surrender, The After Party, Floral Terrace, and My Arcadia. In 2010, we played the MD date of the Vans Warped Tour and we’ve had our music featured on ESPNu many times. All of these are great- but we wouldn’t have gotten any of those opportunities without the support of our fans. I think our biggest accomplishment, as a band, is being able to get up on a stage and do what we love for people who really, genuinely, care. Thats not something everyone gets to do and we consider ourselves especially blessed to be able to do that.

If you could tour with any band, past or present, who would it be?

Haha we’d all have different answers. I know Brent (bass) would want to tour with Rush, Porcupine Tree, or Duran Duran. Matt (guitar) would probably love to tour with Smashing Pumpkins, Blink 182, or Jimmy Eat World. I know TJ (drums) would want to tour with Senses Fail, or Paramore and I would love to tour with someone like The Starting Line, Neon Trees or The Killers. I think we can all agree a Tenacious D/The Getaways co-headling run would be amazing! :)

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for within the next year?

Definitely a winter tour and a new EP! As I said, we are writing for a new release so its’ pretty exciting! Stay tuned!
